Raising Fish in your pond/dugout is a course for anyone interested in raising fish for recreational purposes. The course will provide an overview of specific requirements to raise fish. This includes selecting and constructing a fish pond, licensing requirements, purchasing fish & supplies, feeding, water quality, aeration, and disease, predator & weed control. There will be speakers from the Alberta Aquaculture Association and Alberta Agriculture and Food who will relate specialized knowledge and direct experience to the workshop.
In addition to classroom instruction, participants will have the opportunity to view various fish culture and aeration equipment, and speak directly with the industry representatives. This can include commercial fingerling suppliers, licensing inspectors and department staff from the Provinces Aquaculture Group.

Attendance will be limited by seating capacity. Courses having less than 10 paid pre-registrants will be cancelled. Cost of the course is $25.00 and includes GST, a course manual, and a refreshment break. The manual provided contains additional materials not covered in class.

History and current administration
The Legal Aspects of Fish Culture
Licences, inspections, allowable species, restricted and
prohibited zones, importing fish, water resources and effluent discharge, etc
Picking Your Site
Design & construction, nutrient
loading, slope, size, soil, etc.
Purchasing Your Fingerlings
Cost, availability, size, stocking -rates,
times and dates, expected growth, temperature requirements
Feeding Your Fish
Is it necessary, type and size of feed,
floating vs sinking, coloring, insect and crustacea requirements, purging for flavor, etc
Maintaining Good Water Quality
Aeration, compressors, windmills,
diffusers, dissolved gas levels, monitoring equipment, etc.
Managing Problems with Weeds, Disease and Predator Damage
Identification of problems and solutions
for preventing or controlling their occurrences
Use of Triploid Grass Carp for Biological Weed Control
Discussion on the availability and
potential of grass carp for solving types of weed problems.
Harvesting, Preparing, and Processing
Quality of flesh, canning, smoking, care of flesh, freezing, etc.
